Message of the Program's Coordinator at UWI

Promote the study of the insular and geopolitic Caribbean in its historical, linguistic and cultural manifestations in its academic formats, professional communication networks, and cooperative learning communities between the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao and higher education institutions in the Great Caribbean.

It is the International Student Exchange Program between the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao (UPRH) and The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus in Barbados.  The Program constitutes an agreed initiative between the Spanish Departments of both institutions.  The UPRH, as well as UWI-Cave Hill agreed to establish a program to facilitate the practice and development of the Spanish language in the academic majors of the caribbean student.

The Spanish Departments from both institutions agreed to a transdisciplinary academic protocol this exchange program.  By this agreement, students of UWI-Cave Hill requesting exchange to UPRH will have the opportunity of making a cultural-idiomatic internship in Spanish on his/her academic major, also take courses of interest in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Business Administration.  The UPRH students requesting exchange to UWI-Cave Hill, Barbados, also will have the opportunity to develop his/her idiomatic skills with the English language, while taking courses on the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Business Administration Departments.

Provide the sub-graduate students of both institutions an opportunity of study and investigation that will allow them to refine their communication in Spanish or English.  It, also, will strengthen the cultural and academic exchange between Puerto Rico and Barbados.  This proposal has been designed to promote the exchange of academic opportunities which are not available within the academic programs of Spanish, Humanities, Social Science, and Business Administration at the home institution.
